Our new Windows on the Water at Yankee Point (WOW) opened quietly for staff training on Friday and Saturday May 27 &28 to positive reviews from all takers. Not bad considering we started in March and only two of us did the bulk of the work. Credit has to go first to Sam Nuckols, our Architect and Wayne Bishop our Yard manager and Chief Shipwright, Carpenter, Cabinet Maker Extrordinair. Yours truly was the grunt labor and by the end of the project could almost always figure out how to cut a piece of siding for a 6- 12 roof!
The facility houses two separate function rooms:
First is a Slip Holder's Lounge at the West side of the building that is open 24/7 to our slip holders and transients. It contains a mini kitchen with microwave, two burner stove top, sink and coffee maker and has comfortable seating for small gatherings and a large screen TV with satellite TV service. There is already WiFi service to the marina. Slip holders will maintain their Lounge, dump theri own trash etc. The room is bright and cheerful with charts on the walls and separate zoned heating and cooling. The only rule is no food to be stored in the facility! Slip holders also are automatic members of the WOW Events Center and can make reservations for tables for dinner when that facility is open.
Second is the Events Center which will be available for private parties, family reunions, wedding receptions, company meetings, etc., all catered by WOW Catering. It is a private membership club but membership is open to the public for a small fee of $10 per year per family. It is our intent to provided meals in the facility initially on Friday and Saturday evenings from 5-10 PM and expanding as public interest, staffing and triaing allow, This will all be catered by WOW Catering via golf cart and dumbwaiter!
We have set up the Center with a 60" screen HD TV complete with direct connect computer hookup for meetings and individually controlled speakers for music and/or presentations. We also hope to have live music on Fridays or Saturdays to see if we can't get some folks out there dancing and having a good time. Of course the facility is accessible by both land or sea.
All we ask is that everyone act responsibly and use a designated driver at all times.
We envision the slip holders reserving the space for larger get togethers (no cost for slipholder meetings as availability permits) where they can plan sailing and crusing events, etc. as we stive to set up a network of reciprocal agreements with other marinas on the Chesapeake for transient berthing. We hope to create a fun atmosphere with emphasis on getting out there and using your boats!

Comments and Suggestions are always welcome. And that is a good point - EVERYONE is welcome at our WOW Events Center. We want it to be open to any and all and hope to create the friendly atmosphere that has made Yankee Point Marina one of the top 10 "Mom & Pop Marinas in the last eleven years based on the Chesapeake Bay Magazines Reader Survey (although in 2011 Chesapeake Bay Magazine seems to think that only Maryland is on the Bay!).
